Understanding The Differences In Stairlifts

Stairlifts are an inexpensive alternative to adding another room to the base floor of your house. Additionally, stairlifts will make your life hassle-free since you do not have to keep shifting houses every now and then.

If you are living in a home where there is more than one floor and there are people living in the house and who find it hard to climb the stairs, then you need to invest in a good quality stair lift. For all those who are not aware, stairlifts are very useful for people who cannot otherwise climb stairs to access other areas of the home.

Before you look to buy stairlifts for any of the family members, you need to know what the different kinds of stairlifts available are. Primarily, there are curved stairlifts and straight stairlifts. Straight stairlifts are those which are ideal when there is no bend or curve at any point on the staircase. The basic functioning of straight stairlifts can be best explained as running along a railing. To put it in simple words, if the staircase is straight, then the railing has to be straight. What this implies is that you do not have to customize the stairlifts to make it ideal for the curved staircase in your home. Since the only difference would be the length, the rails can be customized. This would lead to reduced manufacturing costs. Thus, the price paid by the buyer to purchase straight stairlifts is considerably lower as opposed to curved stairlifts.

Curved Stairlifts

Curved stairlifts should be purchased when there is a bend or a curve either at the top, middle or the bottom of the staircase. When there is a curve at any point of the staircase, then you cannot install straight stair lifts and you will have to install curved stairlifts. The key difference between a straight stair lift and a curved stair lift is the railing on which the lift runs. The railing should perfect fit the contours of the stairs. So if the stair case has a curved shape, then the railing has to be customized to the exact shape. Thus, when the curved stairlifts is installed, it smoothly runs up and down.

Stairlifts - A Brief Overview on the Need and the Demand

Stairlifts are commonly used for transporting carts, wheelchairs and even people. And in recent times, they are much in demand in the UK.

Stairlifts are essentially mechanical devices which are used by people to climb stairs without requiring a lot of effort. These are commonly used as a low-cost alternative to cargo lifts or even passenger lifts.

Many people even use stairlifts at home. Passenger lifts are quite huge and eat up a lot of space. On the other hand, stairlifts are quite compact to use. Climbing stairs up and down becomes extremely easy with stairlifts. These are primarily used by senior citizens or elderly people who find it difficult to climb stairs. They are usually installed on the staircase which makes climbing effortless and burden free. Stairlifts are of two kinds- straight and curved. Depending on their purpose, these are used for various types of stairs or even buildings with multiple floors. For straight stairs, a straight stair lift will be used. A stair lift can be fixed effortlessly to a stair track and can be moved downwards or upwards.

It is somewhat complicated to install curved stairlifts since they need to be customized first based on the staircase bends. Needless to say, a curved stair lift involves some effort while constructing and is also little more expensive as compared to a straight stair lift. Though stair lifts have been in use for many years, the present – generation ones are equipped with multiple precautionary features. Some of these stair lifts also come with sensors for detecting any kind of obstruction that they may sense. When the sensors detect any kind of obstruction, the stair life will cease to function instantly so that a collision does not occur. Most of the stair lifts are also operated through a single switch. The switch cannot be powered on if the stair lift mechanism is not in place. The modern stair lifts feature all safety measures.

Both electric UK Stairlifts and battery operated ones are sold in the market. It is economical to purchase electric stair lifts but they will stop functioning if power supply is cut off. Though battery operated stair lifts are slightly expensive than electric ones, they continue to function effectively when in an event of power outage. Stair lifts also render themselves for use in narrow and steep stair cases. It is possible to customize these stairlifts to fit any type of a staircase, be it broad or a narrow one. Some of these stair lifts can also be neatly folded and stored securely when you do not require them. With such a fold able design, the empty space can then be utilized for some other purpose. Some of these stair lifts are quite wide to fit even a wheel chair. Some of these also find application in transporting cargo. Most of the modern-day stair lifts boast of a slew of features and offer optimum comfort to the user.

When a stair lift has to be purchased, its exact usage should be well considered before the final purchase decision is made. The height and weight of the individual who will be using the stair lift should be factored in before you purchase a stair lift.

Working of Stairlifts

Stairlifts is one of those inventions of science that has brought a ray of hope in the life of the disabled and handicapped.

A stairlift is actually a chair that travels along and rail or track that is mounted to theflight of stairs. Using the stairlift is very easy and it has been made it in this way so that the elderly do not have any issues in operating them. Although the operation of the stairlift is stress-free but it is equally important to understand the internal working of this great device.

Stairlift has two main components - chair and the motor beneath it. These are the components that play a prime role in the working of the stairlift. The motor is powered using a battery. The motor would there by turn the gear that is entangled into a geared strip on the track or rail. When the gear moved the chair is moved laterally along the geared strip. In the same way when the motor turns, the gear placed under the chair moves in one direction. For moving the chair in another direction, the motor’s direction of movement has to reverse.

There are different switches present on the stairlift. These switches are used to move the chair without when anyone is present on it. This feature is very useful in the situations when both the people in the house are using the stairlift and the lift is at the other end of the track. When the user wants to use it, the call/send switch is used to call the other person. One other use of this switch is to move the lift away when it is not in use or after its use has been completed. There are many people who do not prefer the lift to be parked in the master sitting room so they use this feature to send the lift to the other corner of the house. The call switch is used then to call the lift back when it is required.

Although the design and style of the stairlifts varies from company to company but the basic component of the stairlift remain the same. The basic components of the stairlifts include the following:
  • Track or Rail - Track is the supporter of the chair. It basically provides a mechanism to drive the chair and guide it up and down the stairs. This is very similar to the rail tracks guiding the train.
  • Track Overruns - stair lifts many a times provide an option to overrun at the top of the track, bottom of the track or both. The purpose of this is to move the operator away from the stairway so the stairlift can be accessed safely or when the stairlifts has to be dismounted. The prime reason behind this is to save the user from falling on the stairs.
  • Power supply - The batteries are needed for the operation of the stairlifts. Power is needed to charge these batteries. In units where there no batteries, power supply is needed for operation of the chairlift. The non-battery lifts use a lot of power and need a dedicated unit.
  • Motor - The motor is the component that makes the chair move along the track.
  • The motor that drives a Curved Stairlift chair along the track is found in the base of the seat.

The above described are the main constituents of the stairlift. Other components of it include the seat, seat belt, foot rest, battery and its charger and the switches. Having the knowledge of the working of the stairlift shall make the operation easier.
